This hike is the opposite of the hike from Discovery Bay to Tung Chung. Although it is the exact same trail, it is a completely different experience coming from the opposite direction as are many hikes. Different scenery and different levels of difficulty can be experienced depending on which direction you decide to take.

This hiking trail gets 3 stars for enjoyment as most of the trail paved and the views are nothing to rave about until you get to Discovery Bay, where on a very clear day you will be able to see Hong Kong Island and Victoria Harbor, as well as, of course, Discovery Bay. Difficulty ranks in at 4 stars as the hike is quite long and the gentle slope to the maximum height of 465 metres takes quite a while.

Starting in Tung Chung, from the MTR station make your way toward Exit C. Entering into the shopping mall tak the first escallator up and then do a U turn and take the next escallator up above Fortress.

Cross the bridge and head down the escallators at the other side. Exit the building and head down the stairs to your right. Follow this road to the end past Carribean Coast (highrises on your left).

Turn right into Hei Tung Street and look for a trail to the side of the petrol station at the end of this street. Follow this concreted path until you reach the underpass. Proceed through the underpass.

Continue out the other side and follow the path that meanders its way around the body of water here. At the fork in the road, be sure to keep to the right.

Continue up the hill. At the bridge, keep right and follow this path which leads through a small village. Continue to follow this path which continues up on a slight and continuous gradient. Personally I prefer to hike this trail starting from Discovery Bay as you can get the hill out of the way in the first hour of the climb. Coming from Tung Chung, however, the first three hours is nothing but uphill. Although it is a gentle rise, it is a rise nonetheless and can get quite monotonous after a while.

The path goes downhill for a little while here as we come into Tung Chung New Town. There's a dunny (that's Aussie for toilet) here in case you need to use it. Keep to the right past the toilets then stay left at the next sign. Once over the bridge, that is the end of the town. Continue up the hill and keep right at the next junction.

At the fork in the road keep left, following the sign which points to Mui Wo. About a quarter of the way up the hill you will get to a lookout point (there is a hut here). This is a great time for a rest as you will most likely start to feel your legs begin to hurt. Have a drink and a snack and carry on.

Looking back at the Lookout Point

The signs along here point out that this was part of the Olympic trail which appears to be just over 5km in length. This is evidentely almost the halfway point. At what seems to be the top of this trail, you will find a red sign to your left with a little dirt trail leading past it. The sign warns that there are works in progress and mentions 'no entry'. If you should choose not to take this trail, you may continue down the concrete path to Mui Wo. The works that are currently in progress here is an extention of the Lantau North Extention Country Trail (or so it seems). By the looks of it, this trail will continue on all the way to Disneyland and possibly on to Sunny Bay MTR station from there.

The trail past this sign has been widened by about a meter in most parts and has currently been extended all the way to the back of Discovery Bay (as of the 6th Feb 2009). I imagine it will take quite a while longer until the path reaches completion if it is to end at Disneyland (perhaps by the end of 2009).

Follow the path past the red sign and up up up the mountain. The tallest mountain you can see from down here is the one that we will be aiming to get to the top of. Did I mention this is a difficult hike? Follow the cut out path for what seems like forever. If you are lucky you will have some action as I did as this helicopter flew back and forth carrying some sort of building materials.

Discovery Bay Golf Course

Along the way, you will pass the back of the Discovery Bay Golf Course which offers some nice vies of the course. On this particlular day I was wearing my flats as I had originally planned to go through to Mui Wo, therefore I took a shortcut to Discovery Bay.

Follow the path around when you see this big rock at the end of the hiking trail. Shortly after this you will come across a pile of rocks on the right hand side of the trail. This is the shortest route back to Discovery Bay, offering some nice views of the dam and the houses located near the golf course.

Take a right at the rocks and follow the narrow path down the mountain. Mid-way there is a stream that crosses the path with a significant waterfall just down from there should you wish to venture down the rocky slope. Please be careful if you do. At this time of the year the stream was rather dried out but I imagine that during the rainy season this can get quite a bit of water flowing through it.

Make your way up the slope on the other side of the stream and take care as the mountain is quite steep here with a good drop to the right. Over this hill you will see the dam in the distance. Head towards it and make your way down the slope towards the road.

At the road turn left and head down into Discovery Bay. If you take a right at the end of this road you will head towards the Plaza where you can either catch the ferry to Central or the DB01 bus to Tung Chung, the DB02 bus to the Airport or the DB03 bus to Sunny Bay MTR station.
