This hiking trail gets maximum stars for enjoyment as it is 100% off concrete paths, it offers great views (on a clear day) of the Soko Islands, Chi Ma Wan Peninsula & Pui O, Tung Chung & the Airport, and Lantau Peak. It also gets you well away from the otherwise noisy Hong Kong. Difficulty ranks in at 4 stars due to the 470 meter ascent, which by the way is completed within the first 2km of this hiking trail.
Catch either the number 11 bus to Tai O or the number 1 bus to Mui Wo from Tung Chung and get off just as you reach the top of Tung Chung Road. If you miss the stop, you can catch the number 1, 11 or 23 bus back up the hill in the opposite direction, as I did.

Lantau Trail Stage 2 reversed starts at distance post L018 from the end of Lantau Trail Stage 3 reversed. Cross the road from distance post L018 (to the left side of the road when coming from Tung Chung), and head upthe stairs, keeping left wherever possible.

At the top of this short set of stairs, keep left, heading up the hill between the tall trees.

This is a long climb to the top - about 2km of non-stop climbing, so be prepared to use up most of your energy on this section of the trail.

On the way up Sunset Peak, you can see some great views of Lantau Peak to your left.

Hong Kong International Airport is visible to your left on the way up Sunset Peak.

Wildlife along Lantau Peak Stage 2 reversed consists mainly of small insects and grasshoppers. I did once however encounter a Burmese Python which almost fell on top of me, and it was about 8 meters long!

After distance post L016, Pui O and Chi Ma Wan Peninsula can be seen to your right.

After passing distance post L013 you will come to a fork in the path. Keep to the left.

Tung Chung and Chek Lap Kok International Airport is once again visible to your left.

When you reach the sign (pictured below), keep right. The path leading down to the left is Wong Lung Hang Country Trail which heads down to Tung Chung.

Follow the yellow signs pointing towards Nam Shan.

Pui O Beach and Chi Ma Wan Peninsula become visible once again to your right.

At the bottom of the hill, past distance post L007, continue straight ahead through the junction.

After passing distance post L006, and reaching the bottom of the next descent, continue straight ahead.

When you get to this road, once again continue straight ahead along the trail.

At the fork in the path (pictured below), keep left. The trail to the right also leads to the same point however.

Lantau Trail Stage 2 Reversed ends at distance post L005, to the side of South Lantau Road.
From here you may continue onto Lantau Trail Stage 1 Reversed which follows South Lantau Road down into Mui Wo, or you may hail a cab and taxi the rest of the way.
Nam Shan Tree Walk is also located at the end of Lantau Trail Stage 2 reversed.
You may also go on to South Lantau Country Trail which will take you all the way back to where you came from on Tung Chung Road. South Lantau Country Trail then continues down to Lantau Trail Stage 10 where you can walk a little further, down towards Tong Fuk on South Lantau Road where you can catch the number 11 bus back to Tung Chung. Note however that this country trail is 10km long.
