This is one of my favorite hikes in Discovery Bay as it is rather short (less than 2 hours) and it offers great views on a clear day. Half of the hiking trail is covered by trees and it is a 50/50 sand/concrete trail. Starting from the ferry pier and returning to the ferry pier is perfect for anyone coming over for a hike either before lunch or before dinner.

This hiking trail gets 4 stars for enjoyment as the views of Discovery Bay and Hong Kong Island are exceptional on a clear day. It also passes through the Trappist Monastery and several small villages along the way. Difficulty ranks in at 3 stars.
The best starting point for this hike is from Discovery Bay ferry pier or the bus terminus. Starting from the ferry pier, head left along the waterfront and then veer right up the road. At the T intersection, turn left and follow the road. When it descends, cross the road and turn right.

As soon as you cross the road, look for an entrance to the right through a fence.
This path takes you to Nim Shue Wan, a small village just out of Discovery Bay.
There is a small nursery through here which sells affordable plants and flowers. Check it out for some good bargains.
Follow this path alongside the waterfront. When you get to Nim Shue Wan, you will pass right through some of the local houses (or so it seems) on your way towards the Trappist Monastery.

Pass through the porch of the first residence and then veer left at the fork in the trail.

Continue through Nim Shue Wan and follow the signs which point to Trappist Monastery.

Unfortunately this is a common sight along the beaches of Nim Shue Wan. Local Discovery Bay green group, DB Green, often clean up these beaches, however every morning new rubbish washes ashore.

Giant Golden Orb Weaver spiders are common along this trail during the summer months. This is how they get their name - when the sun shines on it's web, it is golden in color.

As you climb this section, you will be greeted by views of Peng Chau in the foreground and buildings from Kowloon and Hong Kong Island towering behind.

Don't ask me how they got their jeep up here, but obviously they couldn't get it back out again!

To the left are some great views of Discovery Bay.

As you pass the villages, you will get to the road below. Turn right and head up the steep slope.

To the left, you will catch glipses of islands and the city from between the trees.

In the bushes and trees around you, if you look closely, you will see many Giant Golden Orb Weaver spiders.

As you pass through Trappist Monastery, keep right at the fork in the road, and then take an immediate sharp right, heading up a dirt trail.

Take care along this part of the trail as the rocks can get quite slippery during wet and humid months.

At the top of this section turn right and head towards Discovery Bay.

On a clear day you will get to experience some great views along this section of the trail.

The trail winds around the mountainside, just below Discovery Bay Golf Course.

At the fork in the path, keep to the right and head towards the back of La Vista.

At the end of this path, transition onto a concrete path which winds it's way down the hill.

On a clear day you can expect fantastic views out to Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

At the end of this concrete path you will come to a drainage channel. Turn left at the drain while watching your step as it is quite steep. Turn right at the bottom and continue down towards the back of the residential buildings.

Go around the building at the bottom and follow the road downhill. Lookout for the stairs on the left. Don't worry if you miss them as you can continue down the road and get to the same spot at the bottom of the stairs.

At the bottom of the stairs merge onto the road to the left, then cross the road and head down to the left, back to the ferry pier.
