As much as I love hiking in Hong Kong, I have recently given it a back seat when it comes to priorities in Hong Kong. As always money has moved into first position. Those living in Hong Kong will know that more than anyone, as their jobs are pretty much their lives.
Luckily I am not working ridiculous hours like most, however my days as a "Sky Trucker" have got me awake at crazy hours and asleep when I really shouldn't be. Jet Lag does that to your body, however a long haul trip once…

As recent visitors to HK, we stayed at the T-Hotel, convenient to the Peak Trail near the Pokfulam Reservoir. There are several ways to walk up and down to/from and around the peak. It is a nice introduction for visitors!

This morning I discovered a whole network of trails being built around Nim Shue Wan, a small village near Discovery Bay. These trails are currently being built as the array of tools lying around suggests.

These trails are not yet fully complete, with dead ends scattered throughout, however I did spot at least three individual trails with many intersections along the way.

Many of the trails are currently off-camber with lose rocks and sawn-off…

Due to poor attendance rates over the past few months and work commitments, I will be scaling down my events and focusing them on Discovery Bay where I live. I'll also be changing my profile name from "Hiking Hong Kong" to "Michael Pieper" so that I can better form a group of regulars for Discovery Bay events.
As a result, I will be opening up the possibility for members to create their own events either publicly, privately or in their own districts. I will still be vetting these…

To become a monthly event, our first Lantau Trail Charity Challenge was indeed just that - a challenge.
The challenge was to complete the 12 Stages of Lantau Trail in just 12 hours to raise money for Hong Kong breast cancer care services through the Hong Kong Cancer Fund. Pictured below: Sunrise on the morning of the hike.…

As a hiker in Hong Kong, I am very passionate about the environment and the air that we have no choice but to breathe when exploring Hong Kong's wild side.
Air pollution in Hong Kong, to be honest, is pretty bad. Sure, it's not as bad a Beijing or other areas in China, however, when compared to other countries/places in the World, Hong Kong is pretty darn filthy.
General air pollution used to be of the most concern in Hong Kong, however recently the focus has been made on…

Just when particulate filters were placed on our coal power plant stacks, and our skies turned blue around Lantau Island, the Government have gone ahead and approved one of the World's largest incinerators to be built in Shek Kwu Chau. Chi Ma Wan Peninsula pictured below.

This is the slowest, most environmentally destructive and most expensive of Hong Kong's options for waste treatment. The EIA has currently withdrawn, but the project is still planned to go…

More of us need to show our DISLIKE towards air pollution in Hong Kong before the Government decide to do something more about it. As I type this post, I am looking out of my office window in Discovery Bay. When I look up to the skies, I see a pleasant blue sky, some white/grey fluffy clouds, and the moon - looks like a full one tonight. However, when I look towards the horizon, the furthest object I can see is a very hazy Disneyland Hotel, only 3km away. Beyond that could be anything, I…

After having hiked past these 24 cabins located near the top of Sunset Peak several times, I decided that it is about time that I know more about them.

I quickly found out that information on the internet is quite limited, even Wikipedia only has a few lines of content. After a while of searching though, I discovered some interesting information.

The cabins that you will find at the top of Sunset Peak on Lantau Island were originally built by…

If you've hiked Lantau Trail Stage 3, you've had the perfect view of Shek Pik Reservoir (below), the third largest in Hong Kong after Plover Cove Reservoir and High Island Reservoir.

Shek Pik Reservoir is located on the south side of Lantau Island, just above Shek Pik Prison. The reservoir was completed in 1963, after 6 years of construction. It has a storage capacity of 24 million cubic metres.

Lantau Trail Stage 4 was once located around…

I often hike along Lantau Trail which offers many views of the Soko Islands, however I hardly know a thing about them. Today I thought it was about time to do some research, so here goes:
The Soko Islands (索罟群島) are a group of islands located to the southwest of Lantau Island.Views of the Soko Islands can be seen from Lantau Trail Stage 2, Stage 3, Stage 5, Stage 8 & Stage 9. Below, the Soko Islands can be seen in the distance from Lantau Trail Stage 9 Reversed.…

Lantau Trail Stage 7 is a great hiking trail that offers great views as well as a good variety of trail compositions which makes the hike enjoyable throughout. Wildlife is abundant and perhaps the only let-down of this trail is the amount of concreted paths.

Lantau Trail Stage 3 takes you over the highest peak on Lantau Island, Lantau Peak, at 934 metres. Views are spectacular on a clear day of Chi Ma Wan, Shek Pik, Ngong Ping, Tung Chung and Sunset Peak. Be sure to set out on a clear day, or when the clouds are high, otherwise you are likely to see little due to smoggy skies or cloud cover.

Lantau Trail Stage 6 Reversed is more of a way to get to Lantau Trail Stage 5 Reversed. Although the second half of it does venture off the paved trails, Stage 6 Reversed is an introduction to Stage 5 Reversed which trumps over Stage 6 Reversed.
